About Livingston, NJ

Located just 25 miles west of New York City, Livingston offers a rich blend of historical charm, suburban comfort, and modern conveniences. With its deep historical roots and proximity to major highways like Interstates 280 and 80, Route 10, and the Garden State Parkway, Livingston has evolved from a rural farming town into a thriving suburban community, making it an ideal place for families and commuters alike.

Historical Beginnings

Livingston Township, named after William Livingston, New Jersey's first governor and a key figure in the creation of the U.S. Constitution, was officially formed in 1811. Settlers from Newark originally purchased the land from the Lenni Lenape Indians in 1702 for 130 pounds. The seven original hamlets of Livingston petitioned for township status, and the first town meeting took place in February 1813, where the community decided on a local government led by a mayor and a township committee.

Community and Government

Livingston transitioned to a Council-Manager form of government in 1957, with a Town Council made up of five elected members. Each year, a mayor is selected from among the council members. The community enjoys extensive services, including highly rated public schools, numerous parks, recreational programs, and a robust senior services department.

Modern Living in Livingston

Today, Livingston offers residents a comfortable suburban lifestyle, with convenient access to New York City and nearby New Jersey attractions. The town’s commercial areas, including the Livingston Mall, provide shopping and dining opportunities, while the residential areas offer a variety of homes in tranquil neighborhoods. The community's close-knit atmosphere, excellent public services, and commitment to preserving its rich history make Livingston an exceptional place to live and raise a family.

Early Economy and Education

In its early years, Livingston’s economy was primarily based on farming and lumber. By the time of the Civil War, shoemaking and dairy farming had become major industries. Education also began early, with the first school built in 1783 on Northfield Road, now Roosevelt Plaza. The lack of a major rail line limited population growth, but that changed with the development of better roads and the rise of automobiles, turning Livingston into a desirable commuter town by the mid-20th century.

Post-World War II Growth

The post-World War II era brought significant growth to Livingston, with housing developments quickly replacing farms. Between 1950 and 1970, the population skyrocketed from under 10,000 to over 31,000. Today, Livingston remains a comfortable suburban community with a current population of nearly 30,000, as of the 2010 census.

Recreation and Education

Livingston offers a strong public education system, with six elementary schools, two middle schools, and a comprehensive high school, which was awarded the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Award. The town also has numerous recreational facilities, including two community pools, tennis courts, and youth and adult athletic programs, making it a popular destination for families.

Looking Ahead

The future of Livingston is bright, with continued development and investment in infrastructure, education, and recreational facilities. The township remains committed to maintaining its historical charm while embracing modern living, ensuring that it remains a desirable community for generations to come.
